Leaks & Damages
A leaking shower can cause serious and expensive damage to your home unless treated early.
The longer you avoid fixing a leak, the worse the damage will become and the more expensive it will be to fix later.
A shower that has waterproofing failure over a long period of time will begin to damage the wall and floor substrates. You really need to have the leak repaired while the damage is still in the early stages and before more serious damage occurs which can be costly, inconvenient and time consuming.
The wall and floor substrate is the surface under the tiles in your shower.
It could be timber, a concrete slab, chip board, villa board, fiber cement sheeting, bricks or render (refer to photos below).
If the substrate is damaged you can not waste any more time, if you dont get it repaired / waterproofed quickly it can end up costing thousands of dollars in damages.

Some Risks that are Associated With Water Penetration
Structural Damage
Both timber frames and solid masonry, including bricks and concrete slabs absorb water, and water penetration can damage critical load bearing areas of a building's construction through:
- rotting and warping of the timber plates and studs that support walls, floors and roofs,
- corrosion of the metal reinforcement in concrete, often referred to as spalling or ‘concrete cancer’.

Rotted wall frames in photo above no longer serving as a support for a wall.
Damage to Electrical Wiring
Water penetration of electrical wiring can lead to rusted connections and short circuits.
Mould & Mildew
Water penetration can lead to a buildup of mould and mildew, which may damage paint, wallpaper, carpet, and items of personal property such as clothing and furniture.
Stains
Water penetration can ruin paint, wallpaper, and carpet with unsightly marks and discoloration.
Risks to Health & Safety
Electricity
Water penetration of electrical wiring can increase the risk of electrocution and short circuit electronic safety devices such as smoke detectors.
Mould & Mildew
The build up of mould/mildew associated with moisture is particularly hazardous to occupants with allergies and respiratory illnesses such as asthma.
